Reporting a Crime

It is the shared responsibility of every campus community member to report crimes on campus to DPS.

Do not handle, touch, or remove evidence. Remove yourself if the crime scene is unsafe. Remain calm.

DPS will need to know:

  • A good description of the culprit including height, weight, color of hair and eyes, clothes, and direction of travel.
  • Vehicle information including make and model of car, color, and license plate number
  • Number of persons involved
  • Date, time and details of the crime

A DPS officer will interview you further to complete the investigation. Some crimes will require the presence and collaboration with the Smithfield Police Department. Any person who is a victim of a crime on campus may request that the Smithfield Police Department also file a report.
